STAMFORD, Conn. Jeffrey Deskovic will share the story of his false conviction for murder and exoneration 16 years later at a Shabbat Service Friday, Oct. 21, at Stamfords Temple Beth El. Deskovic is seeking to win repeal of the death penalty in Connecticut.
In 1989, when he was 17, Deskovic was convicted of murdering Peekskill, N.Y., classmate Angela Correa, even though the jury knew that DNA evidence did not match his, a press release said. The jury based its decision on a confession that came after six hours of interrogation, the release said. After many appeal attempts, a district attorney finally allowed new DNA testing. Deskovic was released in 2006 and the real murderer identified, the release said.
Since his release, Deskovic has advocated against the death penalty and wrongful convictions. He has given more than 50 presentations and published more than 120 articles on the issue, the release said. He has also testified in front of many legislative bodies, including the Connecticut General Assembly. He is working on a masters degree in criminal justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
The event is slated to start after the 7:30 p.m. Shabbat Service, which should be around 8-815 p.m., the release said. Temple Beth El is located at 350 Roxbury Road.
