Eugene Monte, 81, Lifelong Stamford Resident

STAMFORD, Conn. – Eugene Monte, a lifelong resident of Stamford, died May 15. He was 81.

Born Egidio Nicolo Montefuscoli, he graduated from St. Basil's Preparatory School in 1948. Monte served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was employed by Crystal Rock Water for 60 years and still was working until the time of his death.

Monte was honored by numerous business organizations during his lifetime and recently a coffee blend named "Gene's Beans" was created in his honor. He was a trustee of the National Multiple Sclerosis Association for many years. In 2001, he threw the first pitch during a New York Mets game at Shea Stadium in recognition of his work with the association.

A patron of the arts, he especially enjoyed opera, ballet and theater. Monte loved to travel with his wife, Marjorie. They traveled as often as possible to hear opera sung by the world's best, including Placido Domingo.

Monte is survived by his wife, Ruth Marjorie Thompson Monte; a son, Mark Eugene Monte; two daughters, Bonnie Jeanne Monte and Lisa Renee Monte; a brother, Nicholas Monte; a sister-in-law, Judy Monte; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be a wake from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Lacerenza Funeral Home in Stamford. Visitation also will be from 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery in Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, 36 Madison Ave., Madison, NJ 07940.
