'Beetle Bailey' Creator To Be Honored in Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — You may not know who Mort Walker is, but you certainly know his comic strips, “Beetle Bailey,” and “Hi and Lois,” to name a few. On May 2, the Stamford Historical Society will honor the city resident at a gala event.

Walker created “Beetle Bailey” in 1950 based on his experiences in the Army during World War II. Now, over 60 years later, it is the longest-running comic in history to be done by its original creator, a press release said. He and his family team, Comicana, are also responsible for “Hi and Lois,” “Sam’s Strip,” “Boner’s Ark” and “Patches and Garmin,” the release said.

“Mr. Walker’s creations bring history to life through humor,” Pam Coleman, chairman of the Historical Society, said in the release.

The gala will also include a raffle of specially created, autographed cartoons.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Italian Center, 1620 Newfield Ave., Stamford. Tickets are $95 per person and can be purchased by calling 203-329-1183 before April 23.
