AIDS Service Offers Chance to Remember

"This service helps the community to not forget," the Rev. Douglas McArthur, senior pastor at First United Methodist, said at the 13th Annual World AIDS Day Interfaith service held Tuesday evening.

"Complications from AIDS takes millions of lives every year around the world. This service is a chance for people from all faiths in this community to come together in support and caring," said McArthur, director of AIDS Interfaith Stamford, a co-sponsor of the service held at his church.

Clergy from eight local churches and synagogues also participated along with dancers from the Locust Contemporary Dance Works, the Madrigals from Stamford High School, and the Westhill Chamber Singers. The choirs from Union Baptist Church in Stamford and First United Methodist also performed.

"This is one of the few opportunities we have here in the Stamford area for a true interfaith service," said Rabbi Joshua Hammerman of Temple Beth El, one of the founding clergy in the AIDS Day service. Cantor George Mordecai from Temple Beth El also took part.

McArthur summed up the evening this way. "It's important that churches and synagogues stand up and be heard in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Silence is the biggest adversary to this horrible disease."
