Lauper won in the category of Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theater for her work on the new hit "Kinky Boots." It was her first Tony nomination.

The Broadway show "Kinky Boots" came out of its first season with 13 Tony nominations. In the end, it won six Tonys, including Best Musical.

According to the show's website, "Kinky Boots" is about a young man who has inherited his fathers failing shoe factory. To help find a new direction for the factory, he finds inspiration in performer Lola, who needs sturdy shoes for her performances. And together they find a way to help each other.

Justin Paul, a 2003 graduate of Staples High School in Westport, came up short in the same category. Paul had been nominated, along with his writing partner Benj Pasek, for Music and Lyrics for their Broadway debut show "A Christmas Story, The Musical."

Based on the cult movie of the same name, the musical tells the story of Ralphie Parker, an 11-year-old kid in Indiana who is desperate to win the most coveted holiday prize: an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle. A kooky leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a cranky department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the obstacles that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas dream, according to the show's website.

Ridgefield resident and Tony Award-winning actor and director Harvey Fierstein was nominated for Best Book of a Musical for his work on "Kinky Boots." He lost to Dennis Kelly, who wrote "Matilda: The Musical."

This was the seventh Tony nomination for Fierstein, who won four times in four different categories since the premiere of his play "Torch Song Trilogies" in 1982.
