Would You Try Addyi?
- Yes
- No
- Undecided
According to Dr. Romelle Maloney, an OB/GYN at Greenwich Hospital, there's been a lot of hype about it.
No. 1 to know, she stressed, is that it is not the female Viagra.
Instead, it is geared toward premenopausal women with Hypoactive Desire Disorder.
Nor can every doctor prescribe it -- physicians must be certified -- explained Maloney.
According to Dr. Carol Fucigna, interim chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Stamford Hospital, there is also a significant side effect profile, including severe hypotension and syncope, a temporary loss of consciousness caused by a fall in blood pressure.
The use of alcohol is also contraindicated when taking the drug.
"Unlike Viagra, Addyi is taken every day and not episodically, therefore, any patient prescribed Addyi must agree to abstain from alcohol intake for the long term," explained Fucigna.
The good news, agree both doctors, is that Addyi has jump-started the conversation.
