STAMFORD, Conn. — More than a hundred golfers teed off under sunny blue skies at the Rockrimmon Country Club in Stamford on Monday afternoon — all for a good cause.
Just under 140 golfers turned out for SilverSource’s 16th annual golf outing, according to the organization’s Executive Director Kathleen Bordelon
“This is a beautiful place to be,” Bordelon said shortly before the event, which drew the golfers onto a scenic 18-hole course.
The event, which was hosted at the club’s grounds in Stamford and Pound Ridge, N.Y., is SilverSource’s largest fundraiser. Funds from the event support the organization’s medical transportation and a housing stability fund for seniors in need.
Not all seniors are able to drive to their doctor’s appointments. And taxi rides can be expensive for seniors living on a limited budget, Bordelon said.
But those difficulties shouldn’t stop seniors from attending their appointments. “Cost of transportation should not be a barrier to health care,” she said.
Last year, Bordelon said the group gave 6,500 rides. She said the average senior needs an average of 8 rides a year. And while the center currently utilizes one car five days a week, she hopes to expand the service.
The organization also helps seniors who may have financial difficulties secure housing and plan for the future. “We work with them to pay their rent and make sure they understand how to manage a budget,” she said.
Bordelon said it’s often hard to imagine a senior facing homelessness, but it does happen. “It’s not an obvious situation, but it is very challenging,” she said.
The event also honored Building & Land Technology Harbor Point President Paul Kuehner and his wife, Patricia, for their commitment to the community. Bordelon said the couple is very philanthropic and down-to-earth. Both grew up in New Canaan, and they now live in Ridgefield.
“They are very generous with many, many causes that are here in Fairfield County,” Bordelon said. “We’re just honored to have them.”
