"Detritus" explores the "complex narrative of man’s relationship with his environment," a release stated.
In his past exhibition at the gallery, 2011’s Beyond Technique, Bedoya’s focus concerned documenting the eradication of the Amazon’s rainforests. His works took on a largely dark spectrum, with environmental devastation scarring each intricately wrought canvas.
Alvarez is known for using organic materials, such as dirt, ash and bark in addition to acrylic paint. His works have been compared by experts to Jackson Pollock's.
“There is poeticism in his work,” gallery director Fernando Luis Alvarez explained in the statement. “Bedoya stands as a quiet observer -- the proverbial fly on the wall of humanity -- documenting how we interact with and strive to change the environment we are placed within. It is a testament to industrialized society, where the mechanisms of change are blatantly wrought upon the Earth in the form of excavation, deforestation and demolition.”
