Stamford Special Olympics Winner Maya Todrin To Be Honored

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Stamford's Maya Todrin will be the guest of honor Monday at the ninth annual Fairfield County Sports Commission and Special Olympics Connecticut Sports Night Awards Dinner.

Todrin is set to be honored during the awards dinner at 6 p.m., Monday, at the Hyatt Regency of Greenwich, according to a news release. Todrin, a Stamford resident and a student at The Winston Preparatory School, has been selected to represent Connecticut at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey in June, according to the release. Todrin is set to compete at the games in tennis.  

"She will receive a special recognition award at Sports Night that is sponsored by the Darien Sport Shop," representatives said in the release. "Special Olympics Unified Sports brings athletes with and without intellectual disabilities together to play sports, gain physical fitness, develop friendships and demonstrate appreciation and respect for each other both on and off the playing field." 

Todrin has trained at the Darien Lions Club local Special Olympics program for the last two years, according to the release, and this summer she won a gold medal in Unified doubles at the Special Olympics Connecticut's Summer Games in New Haven. 

"Through the joy of sport, the Special Olympics movement transforms lives and communities throughout the state and in 170 countries around the world by inspiring inclusion and respect for all people, on and off the playing field," according to the release.
