Chuck Mercein played for both the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers, who will play each other in an NFL Wild Card game on Sunday. He played running back in the National Football League for seven seasons from 1965-1970. In addition to the Giants and Packers, he also played for the New York Jets. He was a member of the 1967 Green Bay Packers team that beat the Oakland Raiders 33-14 in Super Bowl II.
While he’s known in the region for his years with the Giants and Jets, he’s best remembered for playing a key role in the Packers’ 68-yard game-winning drive in the 1967 NFL Championship game between Green Bay and Dallas, better known as The Ice Bowl, one of the most historic and memorable games in NFL history.
Vince Lombardi’s Packers beat the Cowboys 21-17 at famed Lambeau Field in Green Bay. The game was played in 15 below temperature, with a wind chill at 26 below, and the field was covered in ice due to a turf-heating system malfunction.
Mercein, a Wisconsin native, played in college at Yale University. He worked on Wall Street for various firms after his playing career. The Giants meet the Packers Sunday in an NFL playoff game in Green Bay.
