“It is a privilege and an honor to be able to open the fall concert season of Stamford’s Symphony – Fairfield County’s only orchestra with full-time professional musicians – by conducting 'The Star-Spangled Banner,'” he said.
The first concert is scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m., and the second concert will be held Sunday at 3 p.m.
Led by Music Director Eckart Preu, the Stamford Symphony has become an important of Stamford and Fairfield County's cultural life.
Martin said he and and his wife, Judy, are not only avid fans but also longtime subscribers and supporters of the Stamford Symphony. Martin has enjoyed playing the piano, trumpet and guitar since childhood and during high school was a member of a jazz band, The Ruskin High School Stage Band, which played at the Kansas City Jazz Festival.
Martin has been rehearsing and also received some instruction from Preu. The mayor said he's excited to lead the orchestra even if it is only for a short time.
The concert lineup also includes:
- Norman, The Great Swiftness
- Dvorak Cello Concerto in B minor, op. 104, Featuring Zuill Bailey, cello
- Brahms Symphony No. 2 in D Major, op. 73
