Author To Discuss Post-Taliban Afghanistan In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Sarah Chayes, author of "The Punishment of Virtue:  Inside Afghanistan After the Taliban" will discuss her unique perspective on the conflict in that country as part of the World Affairs Forum Ambassadors' Roundtable Breakfast at the Stamford Yacht Club on Sept. 11 at 7:15 a.m.

Chayes will discuss Afghanistan and the concept of "kleptocracy," or rule by thieves.

Coffee will be served starting at 7:15 a.m., followed by breakfast and Chayes' presentation at 8 a.m.

She is an expert on South Asia policy, kleptocracy, anti-corruption, and civil-military relations. A former reporter and special adviser to the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, she is working on correlations between acute public corruption and the rise of militant extremism. As a reporter, Chayes covered the fall of the Taliban for National Public Radio, then left journalism to remain in Kandahar in order to contribute to the reconstruction of the country, living there almost continuously since December 2001.

She is a contributing writer for the Los Angeles Times opinion section, and her articles have appeared in The Washington Post, The "New York Times and The Atlantic, among other publications.

Admission is free to Ambassadors' Roundtable members, $50 for non-members, $30 for guests of members and World Affairs Forum members.
