Cuddle Up With Ebola? Stamford Firm Sells Plush Toy Shaped Like Virus

STAMFORD, Conn. -- As the last Ebola patient in the U.S. is released from the hospital in New York City, it may feel safe to poke a bit of fun at the deadly virus. And a Stamford company called Giant Microbes has just the item.

Giant Microbes makes plush toys of microscopic organisms that are a million times the real sizes. It makes stuffed toy versions of every microscopic organism from the black death to the enterovirus, from bed bugs to cholera, including one of the Ebola virus. Its website boasts the Ebola virus “has become the T-Rex of microbes.” 

One reviewer gave the plush toy five stars. 

"Great gag gift for a nursing instructor who was getting sick of answering Ebola questions," the reviewer said. Another reviewer said, "Great products. You all have a wonderful sense of humor."

The company says the plush viruses are often used for educational purposes.

“I use Ebola to talk to my kids about current events,” the website says along with a picture of the Ebola toy.

The items for sale include a stuff Ebola virus, perfect for cuddling. It can be found here for $9.95. Unfortunately, it is on back order until Nov. 28. The gigantic Ebola doll ($29.95) and the petri dish Ebola pet ($14.95) are out of stock.

Giant Microbes also says the stuff Ebola virus is helpful to for learning all about the fearsome front-page disease and is an appropriate teaching tool for students of all ages.

It also says a portion of the proceeds of the sale of the toy will be donated to Ebola crisis organizations.
