STAMFORD, Conn. – The Beyond Limits Academic Program, a program of Stamford Peace Youth Foundation, recently introduced a four-part workshop on financial literacy to Stamford youth.

Taught by Samantha Cross, founder of Square One Financial Education and a financial literacy educator for the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, the sessions cover a wide range of topics, including: earning money and financial goal setting, budgeting, credit reports and scores, stocks and bonds, investing and student loans.

In addition to the financial literacy course, Beyond Limits provides students with tutoring, informal mentoring and enrichment.

“Despite Stamford being a base for numerous financial institutions, there is no mandatory financial literacy curriculum required for graduation in the district schools,” said Andy Sklover, co-founder of the Beyond Limits Program.

“That’s why we’ve partnered with Square One to introduce the fundamentals of finance to students in our program. We hope to expand this workshop in the future, to give more students the opportunity to learn much needed basic financial principles.”

Connecticut is low ranking in terms of financial literacy, according to a recent survey. In a research study that examined the financial literacy of states, Connecticut ranked 31st, scoring low in education and knowledge, and in planning and daily habits.

Cross says that teaching children about finance at an early age and engaging children in financial planning and decisions as a family is important.

“The time to learn about personal finance isn’t when you get your first job and you start earning money,” said Cross. “What I love about programs like the Beyond Limits financial literacy workshop is that we are teaching kids about the fundamentals before they get to high school, and their first summer job, and we are also involving the parents; talking about finance at home is key.”

Beyond Limits is dedicated to enhancing opportunities for academic success among local young people. The program currently provides math and science tutoring, informal peer mentoring and enrichment opportunities for Stamford Public Schools students in fifth thru 12th grades.
