McGorty cited the plight of Connecticut's economy and a need to force the state to live within its means in his announcement, Trumbull Times reported.

A Republican, McGorty was initially voted in during a special election in the summer of 2014 and then elected to a full term that fall, said Trumbull Times.

McGorty represents the 122nd House District, which includes parts of Shelton, Trumbull and Stratford. He serves on the legislature's budget-writing Appropriations Committee and the Environment and Judiciary Committees.
