A registered sex offender is facing life in prison after admitting to posing as a teenager in an effort to lure a minor to send sexually explicit images and visit him in Connecticut.

Andrew Cunningham, formerly of Windsor, has pleaded guilty in New Haven to one count of enticement of a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity, U.S. Attorney John Durham, announced.

In March 2017, Cunningham, 38, began talking with a 13-year-old girl on a website designed to pair strangers or text and video chats. Cunningham initially told his victim that he was 17, and later stated that he was 25 years old.

According to Durham, Cunningham and his victim spoke through text messages and phone calls for a week, during which he attempted to have her send illicit photos and attempted to have her travel to Connecticut.

Cunningham has been in state custody since May 2 last year, when he was arrested on similar state charges. He is currently serving a three-year state sentence.

Durham noted that Cunningham was a registered sex offender at the time he engaged the teen. In 2014, he traveled to Illinois and engaged in sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl, posing as a 25-year-old man when he was actually 34.

He was convicted in Illinois of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a minor and was sentenced to five years in prison and two years of mandatory supervised release.  He was released from prison in December 2016.

Cunningham is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing on Feb. 15 next year, when he will face a mandatory minimum term of 10 years in prison and a maximum term of life in prison.
