The American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut awarded two Engineering Excellence Merit Awards to Tata & Howard, Inc. for the Shelton project and one in Watertown.

The Means Brook Dam was built in 1916 in Shelton and is currently owned by Aquarion Water Co. of Connecticut. The dam needed repairs to improve its reliability and safety, according to the announcement.

The project involved replacement of the deteriorated upstream and downstream faces of the dam and the crest, and modernization and rehabilitation of the gate chambers while maintaining the active public water supply.

The work was completed in August of 2015, the firm's website says.

Tata & Howard has Waterbury office, among locations in New England.

The awards were given at a dinner Jan. 23 to recognize the company as an innovator in water, wastewater, stormwater, and environmental engineering solutions, according to the announcement.

The company's Watertown project was a modification of the Skilton Road Stone Masonry Arch Bridge.

Both projects provided improved safety, functionality, and aesthetic value to Connecticut residents, according to an announcement.

“Receiving Engineering Excellence Awards for the two projects was gratifying,” said William S. Andres, the firm's project manager in Shelton and Watertown.

Both "were of critical importance to Connecticut residents for both safety reasons and historical significance."
