Krzystof Bakota, age 47, of Shelton, is charged with first-degree animal abuse and was being held on a $25,000 bond, police said.

Bakota was watching a kitten for a family member, but when they came to pick it up, he told them it had gotten out and was missing, Shelton Police said. Later on, they found the kitten's corpse in his backyard.

Bakota told them that the cat was annoying him, so he slammed it against a table and then chucked it off his back deck where he left it, Shelton Police said.

An autopsy at UConn Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Lab found several skull fractures and hemorrhaging, police said. However, and somehow more horrific, the kitten likely survived the beating and was later killed by another animal.

Bakota will be arraigned on Friday, Nov. 1.
