Brian Reed, host and executive producer of the hit series — which took him more than three years to produce — has told various press outlets he's used to leading the interviews, not being the subject of them. Now that the podcast has come out, the Shelton High School grad (Class of 2003) is a bonafide star and the subject of many a story.

The seven-episode-long podcast revolves around John B. McLemore, a colorful eccentric who has spent his whole life in Woodstock, Ala., and who refers to it as "S-Town."

The story starts with a murder investigation and slowly morphs into a tale of friendship, family, horticulture, tattoos, clockmaking, and a hidden treasure.

In its first week of release last month, it was downloaded 16 million times, according to The New York Times. The show now has 20 million listeners and counting.

Reed, who currently lives in NYC, first came to "This American Life" as an intern and rejoined the staff as a producer in October 2011. In the interim, he was a producer at StoryCorps.
