John Carlos Garcia-Mendez, a resident of New York City, was found in the water near the Manhattan Bridge. Pilot From Danbury Sole Survivor Of Helicopter Crash That Killed Five A 33-year-old Fairfield County man was the pilot and sole survivor of a helicopter that crashed in the East River in Manhattan, killing five, according to multiple sources. Richard Vance of Danbury was the only person to escape the crash around 7 p.m., Sunday, as the Eurocopter AS350, he was piloting went down near 88th Street.
