RIDGEFIELD, Conn. — Ever wanted to try fencing? Fans of Olympic-style sports have a new training option in Ridgefield with the opening of the Way of the Sword.

The Way of the Sword has moved to 722 Danbury Road in Ridgefield, where it has over 4,350 square feet of space to hold classes. The Way of the Sword is a member club of USA Fencing, the national governing body for the sport of fencing in the United States and is a promoter of Olympic fencing.

From ages 8 to 10, students can learn and develop holding a sense of responsibility and fairness. At this age, children are beginning to separate with from their parents and are learning to be social with one another. Each session lasts for 30 minutes of fencing instruction followed by 20 minutes of supervised open fencing. Over time, students will want their own equipment such as a mask, jacket, glove, and foil.

From ages 11 to 17, the training becomes more intense and students start using metal swords and full equipment, complete with a mask. They use the same time training as the younger set, but learn to build more character and trust when working with one another.

Private lessons are available. For adults ages 18 and up, there are classes available only in Ridgefield. Coach Michael Martin is a USFCA Professional Member Certified Moniteur d’escrime – foil.

Way of the Sword is open Mondays through Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
