RIDGEFIELD, Conn. Ridgefield students started the school year with two shortened weeks, thanks to the long Labor Day weekend, and some parents think they should have waited.
School started for most of Ridgefields children on Wednesday, Aug 29, the rest on Thursday, resulting in only two or three full school days before the Labor Day weekend.
But there were several comments on the The Ridgefield Daily Voices Facebook page from parents who questioned sending their children back to school only days before a long holiday weekend.
Bob Jewell's answer to the question posed on Facebook was simple: No. End of discussion. And many other parents agreed.
Stephani Ball Brown and Andrea Fossum Atkins both posted on Facebook, No, start after Labor Day.
The start date wasnt as big of a concern for Felicia Minov Jamieson as the end date.
Starting before Labor Day is not a big deal for me or my kids. They were excited to go back to school this week. With all the snow days we usually get, if we went back to school after Labor Day they'd be in school until the very end of June (which to me is worse than starting in August), Jamieson posted on Facebook.
According to the school district, the reason school starts before Labor Day is to ensure an earlier June end date.
