King's 'I Have A Dream' Comes To Ridgefield Playhouse For Students

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. -- The Ridgefield Playhouse is set to present "I Have a Dream," a special program for school age children.

"The phenomenal impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is chronicled in this compelling dramatization of the life and times of one of the most influential and charismatic leaders of the American Century," the playhouse said in a press release. "Students will be inspired by the story of this great leader's struggle and his dream of lifting 'our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.'"

The shows begin at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at The Ridgefield Playhouse. The event is geared toward students in grades 3 through 8 and is part of the Ridgefield Playhouse Arts in Education Series. Tickets cost $10 each for students, teachers and chaperones..  

"The Arts in Education initiative integrates school curriculum, moral lessons and historical perspective through the performing arts with the goal of providing students and teachers with an enriching performing arts experience," a press release said. "Teachers are encouraged to attend with their classes and parents with their children."

Students can talk with the performers after the hourlong show – a wonderful opportunity for enhanced learning, the playhouse said. Study guides are also available, which provide lesson for teachers to do with their students before and/or after attending the show.

Other events in the series are "Ellis Island: Gateway to a Dream" on Feb. 25, "Golden Dragon Acrobats" on March 3, "Stuart Little" on March 26, "My Heart in a Suitcase" on April 3, "Doktor Kaboom" on May 7 and "We The People" on May 19.

The productions are supported by Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation, The Box of Rain Foundation, First Student Buses, The Leir Retreat Center, The Philip H. and Christine Lodewick Foundation, Newman's Own Foundation and Union Savings Bank.
