The program is being held "in an effort to reduce the number of guns in town" with a "no-questions asked" policy, according to a police statement.
Weapons and ammunition will be turned over to the state police to be destroyed, police said.
Firearms must be delivered unloaded in a clear plastic bag and then put in another container, such as a bag, backpack or box. Firearms must be transported in the trunk of a car.
The following amounts will be given to residents who turn in firearms:
- Working handguns - up to $200
- Air rifle, BB guns, antique firearms, non-operational guns - $10
- Working rifle/shotgun - up to $300
- Pre-ban assault rifle - up to $750
- Post-ban assault rifle - up to $500
- Magazine holding over 10 rounds - up to $20
Gun dealers are not eligible to participate in the program. The gun program is funded through private donations. It is a tax-exempt non-profit organization.
