Ridgefield Firefighter Receives Award Named For Friend Lost On 9/11

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – Lt. Rom Duckworth of the Ridgefield Fire Department remembers Christopher Blackwell fondly and when they first met at the beginning of his career 24 years ago, according to a story in the Ridgefield Press.

They worked together at the fire departments in New Fairfield and Ridgefield. Duckworth recalls learning a lot from Blackwell, such as being passionate about your job and loving what you do, the Press said in an interview with him.

When the World Trade Center was attacked in 2001, Duckworth was working as a contract paramedic at Danbury Hospital. The New York State Office of Emergency Management requested a team from Danbury Hospital, and Duckworth was called to Ground Zero, along with his friend Blackwell, who worked for the Fire Department of New York.

It wasn’t until several days later that he and the rest of the firefighters realized Blackwell had been killed.

It was especially fitting that Duckworth received the Christopher Blackwell Dedication to Service Award on May 21 at Danbury Hospital, an award given to someone who has contributed greatly to emergency medical services, the Press said.

And Duckworth has done just that, creating the program Best Practices in Advanced Life Support with the American Heart Association, a program that changed the way the Ridgefield Fire Department executes cardiac resuscitation, the Press said.
