A call came in about 9:20 a.m. of a woman in labor, Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Tappe said. While Dispatcher Dennis Frulla kept the father calm, two police officers and one Ridgefield fire engine arrived at the home.
Police arrived first, Tappe said, and after assessing the situation, realized the child would be delivered in the house. Officers pulled out an Obstetric Kit to assist with the birth, he said. Firefighters arrived soon to help.
“It was a matter of seconds and that baby was in their hands,” Tappe said. “It was a nice, healthy girl.”
The woman had been in labor for some hours before emergency personnel arrived, he said. “But it was a pretty quick birth, it was a second child,” Tappe said.
The baby was born at 9:35 a.m. Police Lt. Jeff Smith, Police Officer Chris Daly, Fire Capt. John Drake and Firefighter Mike Drake were all on the scene to assist with the baby and her mother.
For Drake, it was nothing new. The girl's birth was the sixth one that Drake has assisted during his career in Ridgefield.
Both mother and daughter were taken to Danbury Hospital by a Danbury ambulance that arrived five minutes after the baby was born.
