Ruth Coles, 87, Longtime Ridgefield Resident

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – Ruth Orton Coles, of Ridgefield, died Jan. 21 at Danbury Hospital. She was 87.

She was married to the late Charles Coles Jr., a former president of Ridgefield Savings Bank.

Coles was born April 13, 1925, in Brewster, N.Y., to Harry and Marion Schaefer Orton. She attended Brewster schools and graduated from Brewster High School. She and Charles were married in 1948, when she moved to Ridgefield.

A homemaker, Coles was employed at various times during her marriage. She worked at the former Genung’s Department Store in Danbury as a photo colorist and later at the Barden Corporation.

Coles was a member of Founders Hall of Ridgefield and a longtime volunteer at Danbury Hospital.

She is survived by two sons, Gary R. (Barbara Byrnes) Coles, of Bethel, and David C. Coles, of Ridgefield; a brother-in-law, William Coles, of Ridgefield; and two grandchildren.

Visitation is from 2-5 p.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home in Ridgefield. Graveside services and burial will take place at Fairlawn Cemetery in Ridgefield in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ridgefield Animal Control Shelter, 40 South St., Visiting Nurse Association, 90 East Ridge, Ridgefield Fire Department Ambulance Fund, 6 Catoonah St., or the Ridgefield Police Department, 76 East Ridge, all in Ridgefield, CT 06877.
