Betty Lou Campbell, 86, Past Ridgefield Business Owner

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – Betty Lou Hillock Campbell of Ridgefield died Nov. 23. She was 86.

She was born March 23, 1926, in Jacksonville, Fla., and was raised in Maryland and California. During World War II, she married Sullivan Graham Campbell and they moved to Cazenovia, N.Y., where they both attended Syracuse University.

Campbell received a bachelor's degree in music and voice and a master’s degree in library science. She also obtained a pilot’s license at a time when it was unusual for women to do so. She traveled all over the world and had a lifelong love of music. 

She accompanied her husband throughout his career with IBM and Xerox. In 1968, they moved to Ridgefield to begin Graphic Sciences, the first company to make fax machines. She held legendary Christmas parties and entertained many celebrities, scientists, generals, politicians, famous artists, writers and musicians, her family said.

Campbell is survived by six children, Shannon Campbell, Colbi Campbell, Jason Campbell, Jessica Campbell, Hillary Campbell-Johnson and Valerie Campbell; and 10 grandchildren.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home in Ridgefield. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
