RIDGEFIELD, Conn. — Robert Vaughn, a longtime Ridgefield resident who was most famous as the American spy Napoleon Solo on the 1960s show "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," died Friday, according to the Hollywood Reporter . He was 83.

Vaughn had been undergoing treatment for acute leukemia, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The film and television star had lived in Ridgefield for many years. A few years ago, he spoke with Daily Voice about he liked best about his hometown .

On the top of his list was Main Street, which he called beautiful with a “real small-town feeling.” The many fields and facilities for Ridgefield youths were also on his list.

The Cellar Door Bistro was one of his favorite restaurants in town along with Luc’s Café. But it is the “overall friendliness” of the Ridgefield and the shops that he enjoyed most, he told Daily Voice.

On television, Vaughn also played detective Harry Rule in the series "The Protectors" and Gen. Hunt Stockwell on "The A-Team."

In movies, he portrayed gunman Lee in "The Magnificent Seven," Ross Webster in "Superman III," and war veteran Chester A. Gwynn in "The Young Philadelphians," a role that earned him a 1960 Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He starred in the film with Paul Newman.

Vaughn also appeared in all but one of the 48 episodes of the British television drama series "Hustle" from 2004 to 2012 as grifter and card shark Albert Stroller. From January to February 2012, he appeared in the British soap opera "Coronation Street" as Milton Fanshaw.
