The Ridgefield Daily Voice asked residents on Facebook to say where they think sidewalks are needed around town.
“A town as nice as Ridgefield should have many more sidewalks for all of us to safely walk in town. I noticed they have added more. Please keep it up,” Heather Sculthorpe Arencibia posted.
Among the roads commenters said needed sidewalks were Peaceable Street, Mamanasco Road, parts of Route 116 and New Street.
For Katherine Woodhouse McGerald, Ramapoo Road needs sidewalks for those who choose to walk into town. “I also think Peaceable should have them. We need to make Ridgefield a more bike friendly and walking friendly town. As someone who runs on the roads, you are taking your life into your hands on some of these roads with the big cars, (I have one, so no judgment!), lack of people paying attention when they are driving, and the fast speeds,” McGerald posted.
“We really need sidewalks on Barry from St. Mary's School to at least where it turns into West Mountain. People walk and run the route non-stop and there are curves where you can't see anything until you are right there. It would well serve both those on foot and in a car,” Lori Schneider Goodman posted.
Still others posted about the need for sidewalks along Route 35 near the Ridgefield Parks and Recreation Center.
One of the main complaints is that sidewalks are not well maintained. Several readers said that during the winter, the road is sometimes safer to run on than the sidewalks.
“Sidewalks should be maintained in the winter — shoveling should be enforced. No use having sidewalks in the winter if people cannot utilize them!” Heather Lorenz posted.
