RIDGEFIELD, Conn. — A 19-year-old from Ridgefield who was a sophomore at the University of Connecticut died Friday in a car vs. tractor-trailer collision about 10 miles from campus, according to NBC Connecticut.
Ryan Meegan, who was a passenger in the car, was a pre-teaching major and competed in soccer and rugby on campus, NBC Connecticut reported.
"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our teammate and brother, Ryan Meegan," the UConn men's rugby team wrote on its Facebook page. "A bright, talented, and hardworking young man who could make anyone smile. It's hard to believe you were taken from us this soon, you will be missed. #RIP Ryan."
Alana Ferrante, a 19-year-old sophomore from South Windsor who was also a passenger in the car, was also killed, NBC said.
The crash occurred at about 4:10 p.m. Friday as the car, driven by another UConn student, pulled onto Route 66 at West Street in Columbia near the Hebron town line and was hit by tractor-trailer, NBC said.
