“The charges are concerning because Mr. Callahan is an educator and role model for Ridgefield High School students,” said a statement from Superintendent Deborah Low. “Mr. Callahan has worked in Ridgefield for 16-years and currently is Senior Teacher of the Physical Education Department, Dean of Students and Coach. Mr. Callahan is recognized as a valued member of the RHS faculty.”
The 52-year-old Fairfield resident has been placed on a leave of absence while the school district reviews the case, the Post reported.
In the accident at Stillson and Fairfield Woods roads, Callahan, who said he was looking at a text, hit a traffic sign and then a tree, police told the Connecticut Post. Police found a half-empty bottle of vodka in his car, the Post said.
Callahan also was charged with failure to drive right, distracted driving and failure to carry a valid insurance card, according to the Post.
