Mackenzie Thompson, 21, of Shelton; Chris Savino, 21, of Ridgefield; and Jesse Doe, 22, of Belmont, Mass., all seniors at Boston University, were walking back to their dorms after attending a Super Bowl party on Sunday, Feb. 5, when they spotted a man on the street carrying several works of art, The Boston Globe reported.
The window of the Galerie d’Orsay on Newbury Street had been broken and an alarm was going off, The Boston Globe said.
Thompson tackled the suspect, 29-year-old Jordan Russell Leishman, while Savino and Doe flagged down police, The Boston Globe reported.
Leishman now faces several charges, multiple media reports said.
The Picasso and Rembrandt etchings and Miró and Chagall lithographs, worth a total of about $45,000, were unharmed, but their frames suffered thousands of dollars in damages, The Boston Globe said.
In a Facebook post, the gallery offered “a special heARTfelt thanks” to the three intrepid students.
“The pride and strong sense of community that makes up the incredible city of Boston is a constant inspiration for us – and we are proud to continue sharing our love for art with the Boston community and beyond,” the gallery wrote.
