For the past decade, Zappa has been focused on performing the music of his late father, the legendary Frank Zappa. In his newly released album “Via Zammata,” his first album of original material since 2006's "Go With What You Know,” fans will see how the Zappa Plays Zappa shows sharpened his skills as a musician as he performs his own music.
Having primarily heard the music his father was working on or listening to at home while growing up, Zappa was exposed to some new sounds on the radio. Like many aspiring guitarists of his generation, Zappa‘s ear was caught by the trailblazing guitar styles of Edward Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. In 1982, at the age of 12, he made his first onstage appearance with his father’s band at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. Later that year he recorded his first single, “My Mother Is A Space Cadet,” released on Frank Zappa’s Barking Pumpkin label.
In 1984, Zappa contributed guitar solos to both “Stevie’s Spanking” and “Sharleena” on his father’s album “Them Or Us” and in 1986, he recorded and released his first full length album, “Havin’ A Bad Day.” In 1988, he signed a deal with Chrysalis Records and released his second album “My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama.” With the release of his third album “Confessions” in 1991, Dweezil Zappa began to branch out musically, blending his heavy rock approach with touches of his father’s distinct compositional insignia.
