Connecticut Woman Dies After Tick Bite, Department Of Health Says State health officials announced the death of a Connecticut resident who developed symptoms of Powassan virus weeks after she was bit by a tick. The Connecticut Department of Public Health announced on Tuesday, June 7, that the New London County resident who was in her 90s died at the hospital on Tuesday, May 17. Mosquitoes From Fairfield County Test Positive For West Nile Virus It's time to get out the mosquito repellant with the discovery of the pesky insects carrying the West Nile virus in five areas in Connecticut, including three in Fairfield County. According to the Connecticut Department of Health, the virus-carrying mosquitoes were discovered last week in Fairfield County in Greenwich, Darien, and Stamford, in New Haven County in New Haven, and in Waterford in New London County. Greenwich, Danbury, Newtown Residents Test Positive For West Nile Virus Three new West Nile virus cases have been detected by the Connecticut Department of Public Health according to a press release the agency issued on Wednesday, Sept. 9, bringing the state's season total to four human cases.  Two of the patients that fell ill in the second week of August, both between the ages of 20 and 39, are recovering in Danbury and Newtown respectively.  One of these patients experienced a severe headache and fever, while the second is recovering from West Nile encephalitis, which is swelling in the brain caused by the West Nile virus.
