Bethel, New Fairfield Girls Basketball Teams Meet For League Title

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Bethel High School tips off against New Fairfield Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the South-West Conference girls basketball championship game at Newtown High School.

Second-seeded Bethel enters the game with a 19-3 record. Fifth-seeded New Fairfield also brings a 19-3 record into the contest. The Rebels won the regular-season meeting between the teams, 43-37, on Feb. 7.

Bethel advanced to the championship game Monday with a hard-fought 40-34 win over third-seeded Newtown. Lily Daniels scored 14 to lead the Wildcats, who rallied from a 13-8 halftime deficit. The Wildcats put the game away at the free throw line, hitting 15-of-21 free throws in the fourth quarter.

New Fairfield upset top-seeded Notre Dame of Fairfield, 48-44. Kristen Teklits scored 27 points for the Rebels, who are making their third straight appearance in the league championship game.

The Rebels won the league title in 2015 and lost last year to Notre Dame of Fairfield. Bethel has not played in the league title game since at least 1996, according to records on the South-West Conference website. Bethel will have its first winning season since at least 2006-07, according to the Max Preps.
