The following was written by Wooster's Middle School Dean of Students Peter Lingenheld about Darby:

"In this seventh-grade honoree, we see a young lady that is a naturally upward influence on the community, and that does the right thing without seeking recognition or reward. Her behavior and demeanor are not attention-seeking, but they are certainly attention-getting in a community like this in which people notice things like courtesy, kindness, effort and positive participation in so many aspects of school life.

"You’ll hear the word 'balance' used by one of her teachers to describe the way in which she uses her energy and personality to help the group or add value to the class, all while showing respect for classmates and adults at all times.

"Balance is also found in the fact that she is known for these positive traits in so many different parts of the school day. Her gentle, easy-going nature is the first thing you might notice, but her contributions to those around her are equally clear as we think back on the first trimester.

"Her presence in the jobs program and demonstration of ‘self help’ in this community was appreciated by many through the beginning of the year. Not only did she volunteer a considerable amount of times, but she was described very positively by her eighth-grade job captains.

“'She worked well in pre-K this citizenship period,' said one. 'She was always on time and showed that she was excited and ready to work. I loved having her as a worker, great job!'"

"Initiative, flexibility, responsibility and maturity are the traits that jump out to me from those descriptions."
