Newtown officers pulled over a car at 1:18 a.m. in the area of 182 South Main St. for failure to drive right, police said. While speaking to Davis, police said the officer detected the strong odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle.
Police spoke to the passenger, 20-year-old Chad Davis of Portland, Oregon, who admitted to having a small amount of marijuana, according to police reports. After the small amount of marijuana was removed from the car, officers still detected the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, police said.
After searching the car police found 21.4 ounces, or 1.3 pounds, of marijuana hidden in the vehicle, according to police reports. Davis was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, illegal sale of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia near a school.
"This is certainly one of the largest marijuana and cash seizures generated from a routine motor vehicle stop in recent memory," said Sgt. Aaron Bahamonde. "The officers involved did a great job."
Davis was released on a $2,500 bond and will appear in court on January 10.
