The 60-year-old woman, who provided the man with redemption codes for nearly $6,900 worth of Target gift cards, did so after he told her she owed the IRS a debt and that failure to immediately pay the debt would result in a lawsuit and a revoked passport, according to The Bee.
Newtown police warned that the IRS will “never call taxpayers on the telephone and demand immediate payment,” according to The Bee, which reported that authorities also urged anyone who receives such a suspicious call to report it immediately to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
