State police did not know why he exited his vehicle in the 8:55 a.m. fatal accident.
Gerard Mauskapf, of Red Hook, N.Y., took the exit and pulled his Ford Fusion over on the right shoulder of the right sweeping turn of the long exit ramp, state police said.
Mauskapf then got out of his car for an unknown reason, and he and his car were hit by a Subaru Impreza driven by an 18-year-old man from Sandy Hook, state police said.
Mauskapf suffered serious injuries and was declared deceased at the scene by EMS personnel, state police said.
The driver of the other car was not injured, but the car's airbags deployed in the crash, state police said.
Both cars were towed from the scene.
The off-ramp remained closed Tuesday until about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday for the state police investigation, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
Exit 11 is for Route 34/Wasserman Way.
Anyone who witnessed the accident or who has any information about it is asked to call Trooper Matthew Cimelus at Troop A in Southbury at 203-267-2200.
