BETHEL, Conn. -- A brush fire at the Terre Haute property off Trowbridge Drive in Bethel has entered its third day, with crews from surrounding towns and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responding to assist Bethel crews.

The fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon, with the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department and Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Company responding. Soon, the Fairfield County East Zone Brush Fire strike team responded, bringing in mutual aid from the Redding, West Redding, Danbury, Stevenson, Monroe, Trumbull, Shelton and DEEP crews.

Crews mostly had the fire under control by evening, and exited the woods Tuesday evening because operating at night was too dangerous. They returned on Wednesday and continued to fight the blaze throughout the day.

On Thursday morning, the Bethel Office of Emergency Management reported that DEEP forest fire personnel were on scene, and that Bethel and Stony Hill had crews assisting. The eastern flank of the fire was out, and crews were hitting hot spots.

Fire officials told the News Times that the fire may have started from a campfire, and that it burned at least five acres. Crews had to pass 2,000 feet of steep and difficult terrain in order to get to the fire, the News Times reported.
