“The race theme remains 'Love Runs Through,'” said 5K Co-Director Katie Blake. “Love runs through everything being done to prepare for this event, and through every step we take to reach our goals. Our goal here is to bring participants a world-class, one-of-a-kind family event filled with love. Whether you are running with us in Newtown, volunteering, fundraising, or running with us virtually … love runs through.”

This year's race to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy will accommodate up to 1,800 runners and walkers, and there will be no lottery for participation. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

There will be an option for joining the event as a Virtual Runner. Children can participate in staggered fun runs of a quarter-mile for kids 2 through 6 and a half-mile for kids 7 and up.

Registration is $26 for the 5K and the Virtual Run and $6 for the kid runs.  Online registration opens at Jan. 24 at 4 p.m. at www.5krunforshf.org.

Staggered kid fun runs begin at 9 a.m. The 5K starts at 9:30 a.m.

Proceeds will benefit the Collaborative Recovery Fund administered by the Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation. The foundation pays the out-of-pocket mental health expenses for eligible individuals who have been most impacted by the Sandy Hook tragedy.

A percent of proceeds will also benefit the chosen nonprofits of the families of the 26 victims.
