NEWTOWN, Conn. — When most people think of cycling, they think of a great workout — for their lower body.

Yet Boostcycle — a 1-year-old indoor cycling studio on South Main Street in Newtown — gives a full upper body workout as well as a lower one.

“We're not like a traditional spin class," said Tatiana Mehmeti of Danbury, who owns the studio with her husband, Valdrin Mehmeti. The couple has a 2-year-old son, London.

“In each 50-minute class, you do a lot of climbing and sprinting, as well as pushups, dips and crunches — all while on the bike, continuing to work your lower body. In this way, you're building upper body strength as well," she said.

Part of the upper body workout involves using a 4-pound weight bar while on the bike.

"Everything is very rhythm-based, we move to the beat of the music. It’s very high energy," Mehmeti said.

Beginning in April, the studio — which has about 500 clients — will be offering virtual classes with an instructor during times when no live classes are scheduled.

The 1,980-square-foot studio recently underwent a major renovation.

“We gave it a whole new look, changing our logo, expanding our lobby area and adding LED lights to the studio for a light show during classes," Mehmeti said.

The couple also own Boostjuice, a 1-year-old Bethel business that sells fresh juices, smoothies, protein shakes, and fruit bowls in the shop at 16 PT Barnum Square.

One specialty is the acai bowl, a dish popularly eaten on the beaches of Mehmeti's native Brazil. The bowls contain acai berries, fruits, granola, coconut and other "superfoods" she said.
