High Road School of Hartford teacher Rachael Chatel was named as the first Teacher of the Year by Specialized Education Services, Inc. (SESI). Two Percent Budget Increase, 18 Employee Layoffs Proposed For Westport The Westport School District may be increasing its budget and cutting jobs if the superintendent’s proposed spending plan is approved. Westport Schools Superintendent Colleen Palmer has proposed a $119,283,880 budget for 2019-20, which represents an increase of 2.68 percent ($3,110,080) from the current budget. The proposal would potentially see as many as 18 jobs in the district eliminated to cut costs. Area High School Teacher Wins $15K Leadership Award A high school special education teacher from Connecticut has won a prestigious $15,000 leadership award. Kelsey LaPrad of Stamford, who teaches at Brien McMahon High School n Norwalk, received the grant as part of the Nellie Mae Education Foundation’s Lawrence W. O’Toole Leadership Awards. Norwalk Teacher Raising Money To Buy Sensory Chairs For Students A fourth-grade teacher in Norwalk has raised more than $800 for her students. Mrs. Hakim, of the Wolfpit Elementary School, is hoping to purchase wobble chairs to meet her students' sensory needs. "My students are made up a diverse set of backgrounds and include English language learners, special education students and those receiving free or reduced lunches," she said on a campaign.  "My students need both wobble chairs and additional seating.
