Text Neck Is A Real Pain, Warns ONS Spine Specialist It seems like everywhere you look, people of all ages are looking down at their phones. They do it at home. At work. In school. In restaurants. While waiting for a train. Even while walking, driving and riding a bike. Concern about the pervasiveness of handheld devices exists for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the detrimental affect they have on the cervical spine of children and adults. Some call it Text Neck. By some estimates, adults spend an average of five hours a day using a mobile phone or tablet, while teens report using their devices almost constantly throughout the…
ONS Patient Is Jumping For Joy With Two New Knees ONS Patient Is Jumping For Joy With Two New Knees
ONS Patient Is Jumping For Joy With Two New Knees No one expects the pain of arthritis to cripple a thirty-something adult, but that’s what Westchester middle school teacher, Mallory Chinn, was faced with. For five years, Mallory tried every non-operative treatment available to ease the worsening pain in her knees. Some treatments would work for a while. Others did not work at all. By the time Mallory turned 40, she had trouble walking and climbing stairs, and missed out on family activities such as bike rides and hikes in the woods. “I was pretty much immobilized,” recalled Mallory, now 43. The defining moment came one day when h…
Surgeons Get Surgery Too! A Physician’s ACL Reconstruction Story Surgeons Get Surgery Too! A Physician’s ACL Reconstruction Story
Surgeons Get Surgery Too! A Physician’s ACL Reconstruction Story It all happened so fast...I recently tore my ACL in our resident faculty annual soccer match on the turf at Chelsea Piers. You know when cartoon characters see stars? I saw stars! It was an immediate, searing, popping pain that literally dropped me to the ground. I knew something was wrong as soon as I injured it — I just wasn’t sure what. As a typical physician, I wrapped it with an ACE wrap, took Motrin and tried to grin and bear it. After a week, it was still swollen and painful and I was not able to put weight on it. I figured it might be something more serious than a sprain or strain, an…
Suffering From A Rotator Cuff Tear? HSS Talks Next Steps Suffering From A Rotator Cuff Tear? HSS Talks Next Steps
Suffering From A Rotator Cuff Tear? HSS Talks Next Steps As the most flexible joint in the human body, the shoulder has a wide range of motion and is more prone to injury than other joints. One very common shoulder problem is a torn rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the joint, and a tear can result from an injury such as a fall or heavy lifting. Many times though, the tear occurs slowly, resulting from normal wear and tear and repetitive activities over many years. As we age, we’re more susceptible to rotator cuff damage. In fact, many older adults probably have a small tear without significant sympto…
You Have A Torn ACL: Now What? You Have A Torn ACL: Now What?
You Have A Torn ACL: Now What? The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, is a ligament inside the knee that provides stability to the knee. ACL injuries are very common and can happen to active athletes of all ages. Maybe you tore your ACL skiing or playing recreational basketball, or your child tore his or her ACL playing competitive sports. Most ACL injuries are non-contact meaning that a collision is not necessary for the injury to occur. At the time of injury, people commonly feel a “pop” within the knee followed by pain, difficulty walking, swelling within the knee and reduced range of motion of the knee. What do y…

ONS Helps Greenwich Artist Regain Her Stroke Felicity Kostakis, an Old Greenwich artist, first noticed a pain in her right elbow while playing tennis. Over the course of a year, the pain invaded her day to day activities to the point that lifting clothing from the washer or taking a jar from the kitchen cabinet was excruciating.  “I began to do everything with my left hand,” said Kostakis. Even more worrisome, it interfered with her ability to paint. “I was so scared it was the end," she said. "Painting is what I do every day. It’s what I love.”  Not knowing what was wrong and fearing the worst, Kostakis made an appointme…
Shoulder Soreness? Look To The Biceps Says ONS Doctor Shoulder Soreness? Look To The Biceps Says ONS Doctor
Shoulder Soreness? Look To The Biceps Says ONS Doctor When shoulder pain strikes, many people assume they’ve somehow injured their rotator cuff. According to Dr. Marc Kowalsky, a shoulder specialist and orthopedic surgeon with Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists, an injury to the biceps tendon can cause shoulder pain and discomfort that can be mistaken for a rotator cuff injury. “The biceps tendon is an often-misunderstood structure of the shoulder and arm,” said Kowalsky. “We now know that damage to that tendon is often the primary cause of shoulder pain in active people.” Anatomically, the biceps muscle has two tendons, called heads, …

However, before hitting the course or court this spring, it's important to take the proper preventative steps to ensure your body isn't being put at risk. “If you haven’t been using the muscles necessary for your sport in the past few months, you’ll need to start slowly and make sure you have the strength and conditioning needed to play,” said Tanya Kalyuzhny, DPT, MDT, director of physical therapy at the Greenwich, Connecticut office of Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery Specialist…

Fairfield County Resident Hopes To Get Back On Her Horse Thanks To Lymbr Lucia will never know for sure what caused her beloved palomino mare Butterscotch to be extra jumpy that day in February 2016. But the Fairfield County resident’s skill wasn’t enough when her horse bucked at the sound of a truck backfiring and Lucia landed on the frozen ground of a trail she rode regularly in Bedford, N.Y. A passerby found Lucia trying to crawl for help and she was taken to the hospital, where she learned that she had not only shattered her pelvis, but had three broken vertebrae and a torn hamstring as well. Seven months post-accident, with approximately the first 16 weeks …
