Checks Stolen From New Canaan Neighborhood Were 'Washed,' Then Cashed, Police Say Police in Fairfield County issued an alert to residents about a string of mail thefts. Officers investigated reports of personal checks being stolen from residential mailboxes in New Canaan on Ferris Hill Road and West Road, the New Canaan Police Department reported on Monday, Aug. 22. According to police, the checks were "washed" and made payable to individuals who weren't the intended payees.  Those who steal mail can "wash" the checks by erasing the ink with chemicals and rewriting the checks to themselves. Uptick In Stolen, Altered Checks Reported In Fairfield County Town A Fairfield County town is seeing an uptick in the number of "check washing" cases. Check washing is the process of erasing the details from an already completed check to allow them to be rewritten, Lt. David Wolf of the Westport Police Department said.
