Teen Shows Little Respect to Running Elders

Sarah Endres is a wisp of a runner, barely looking her 13 years. But the New Canaan athlete, a seventh-grader at Eagle Hill School, has given bigger and older competitors only a fleeting glance of her physique as she speeds away from them in yet more races.

"We have a spring cross-country season at school, but I like to race on the roads, too," she said Saturday, after running and winning the 28th annual Riverside Run in Greenwich. Endres has an affinity for Greenwich races; she ran the Point Perspective on nearby Greenwich Point a few weeks ago and last fall placed third in the Beachfron Bushwhack that was held there.

All of these are tune-ups for her goal race of the spring: the Freihofer's Run for Women, a large national championship event held each June in Albany, N.Y., that draws elite U.S. and international runners. Last year was Endres' first time competing there, and she placed fourth in her age group. She's looking to move up from that placing this year.

In the meantime, look for her in a few other local road races. Just be sure to look quickly, as she won't be standing still for long.
