NEW CANAAN, Conn. — Three St. Luke's teams won semifinal games on Thursday and will play for Fairchester Athletic Association crowns on Saturday.
The girls basketball team defeated Masters, 66-37. The boys basketball team also rolled past Masters, 62-39. The boys hockey team held off Harvey, 4-2.
The girls basketball team plays Greenwich Academy in the league title game on Saturday. The boys basketball Greens Farms Academy, while the hockey team will take on Rye Country Day.
In the girls basketball game, St. Luke's built a 20-2 lead and cruised the victory. "It's definitely a great feeling to get back to the FAA championship game,'' coach Matt Ward said. "We entered the season not really talking about the FAA or NEPSAC tournaments, let alone the championships, so to be here now, with it right in front of us, and the opportunity to repeat and do it at home is pretty special. These girls have worked so hard to be successful this season. Saturday will be fun."
In the boys game, St. Luke's used a 23-3 run to take control in the first half and build a 35-17 halftime lead. "We got a huge spark off of the bench from both Jackson Ryan and John Wisdom and once we got a bit of a lead the rest was history,'' coach Drew Gladstone said. "These kids have worked so hard and have been through so much this year. It is great to get back to the championship. It’s great to have both our boys and girl’ teams in the finals. To host a boys and girls FAA championship doubleheader is a real gift and we are going to treat it as such.”
Goals by Will Frossell, C.J. Woodberry and Jack Neafsey staked the hockey team to a 3-0 lead. Harvey came within a goal, but another goal by Woodberry gave St. Luke's some breathing room.
"We came into this season with the goal of meeting Rye in another FAA championship game,'' coach Zach Brusko said. "Like every team, we have had our ups and downs, injuries and sickness, but we never lost sight of our common goal. We met that goal last night, and we intend to take full advantage of this special opportunity on Saturday afternoon.”
Saturday's championship game schedule is:
- Hockey at Rye, 2:45 p.m.
- Boys basketball at St. Luke's, 3 p.m.
- Girls basketball at St. Luke's, 5 p.m.
