The Storm reached Sunday’s final match at Loomis Chaffee School with three straight wins before falling to St. George's School in the final, 5-2.
St. Luke’s passed a test in its opening game with a 4-3 win over St. Catherine’s School from Richmond, Va. Co-captain Natalie Bachmann, Haley Bloch, Kendall Boege and Ellie Bailey won their matches.
St. Luke’s played without Caroline Pellegrino, who plays in the No. 1 spot, and alternate Katherine Pellegrino for the first contest. Mary Grace Thomas came up from the junior varsity and battled hard in her first varsity match to make sure SLS progressed to set up a quarterfinal against The Brooks School.
With Pellegrino back for the quarterfinals, St. Luke's reverted to its regular lineup and rolled to a 6-1 win over North Andover, Mass. Pellegrino, Bloch, Bachman, co-captain Caroline Nevin, Bailey and Boege won for the Storm to set up a semifinal match against The Shipley School from Bryn Mawr, Pa.
In another tight contest, Pamela Jaramillo sealed the victory for SLS in an epic encounter, eventually winning 13-11 in the fifth. Wins for Bachman, Pellegrino, Bloch and Boege saw the Storm move on to the final with a 5-2 score.
St. Luke’s played some close matches against The Dragons of Newport, R.I. in the finals but fell just short. Bachman and Boege got the two points for St. Luke’s and went 4-0 for the weekend.
"I am unbelievably proud of everyone for coming this far and for turning a group of players into a great team,'' coach Lucas Mathias said. "The girls really wore their hearts on their racquets in the final and gave everything they had. We were definitely the loudest team out there and the support they gave each other was incredible. It is a huge honor to coach this team.”
