New Canaan's Alex Spinu finished second overall and led the Rams to the team championship in the small school division of the Wilton Invitational on Saturday. The Rams compiled 38 points and narrowly edged Weston, which finished with 43 points. New Canaan's girls finished sixth in the small schools division.
Spinu, a junior, completed the 5,000-meter course in 17:15. He finished 25 seconds behind winner Stephen Vento of Weston. The Rams had a tightly bunched pack after Spinu. Patrick Daly finished 10th overall, followed by Brant Hoffman at 14th; Taylor Parsons, 16th; and Paul Clemente, 23rd. Only 47 seconds separated New Canaan's second- through fifth-place runners.
Senior Portia Schultz ran 17:40 on the 4,000-meter (2.47-miles) girls course and finished 44th overall. New Canaan's other scorers included Jensen Lee, Cara Schulte, Margaret O'Rourke and Katie Difazio. Complete results are available.
